The roles and responsibilities of the full-time faculty program director in the School of Nursing include: curriculum development, implementation and evaluation; development and articulation of course learning outcomes; development of student learning resources; establishing retention goals and strategies; selection, orientation and mentoring of part time instructional and clinical faculty; development and revision of academic policies; and engaging with students.
The full-time faculty program director is also responsible for coaching students toward academic, career, and life success. Faculty program directors are expected to engage in service to the College and the School of Nursing by chairing and/or serving on academic affairs councils, School of Nursing committees, subcommittees and task forces. Faculty program directors are also expected to maintain currency in their nursing discipline by participating in professional development and community activities.
The faculty program director must have a working knowledge of ADA compliance, instructional design, examination development, adult teaching and learning strategies, educational technology, and outcomes assessment.
This is a non-tenured faculty position with responsibility for ensuring delivery of quality educational programs that prepares graduates for the demands of the current health care environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
I. Curriculum Development, Maintenance, and Improvement
1.Development and continuous improvement of the nursing curricula.
2.Implementation, evaluation, and revision of courses and examinations.
3.Collaboration with other units to develop and implement student services.
4.Engagement in evidence-based decision making and quality improvement at the program and course levels.
5.Collaboration with the executive director of outcomes assessment and evaluation and other outcomes assessment professionals to develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes.
6.Orientation, mentoring, and evaluation of part-time faculty in instructional and/or clinical faculty roles.
II. College and School of Nursing Responsibilities
1.Participation in School of Nursing curriculum committees and other College-wide committees and activities.
2.Participation in activities that support the College’s strategic plan and the strategic priorities of the School of Nursing.
3.Participation in quality improvement and student satisfaction and retention activities.
4.Represent the SON and College at professional meetings and forums.
III. Professional Development and Scholarship
Faculty are strongly encouraged to engage in professional development and scholarship. The School of Nursing uses Boyer’s framework of scholarship:
Scholarship of discovery
•conducting discipline-specific research for knowledge dissemination.
•exploring or expanding discipline-specific knowledge through independent study.
Scholarship of integration
•editing, reviewing or authoring a book, journal or white paper that integrates knowledge from different sources and disciplines.
•serving on interdisciplinary panels to address educational, professional, or social issues.
Scholarship of application
•sharing expertise and providing consultation.
•applying expertise in practice settings.
•being involved in the crafting of public policy.
Scholarship of teaching
•applying innovative teaching and assessment approaches.
•applying current knowledge, research and best practices in teaching/learning environments.
•publishing textbooks or creating learning objects.
•producing videos for instruction.
•engaging in projects that support instructional activities.
Scholarship of engagement
•actively participating in the work of School and College-wide committees.
•sharing expertise in professional meetings and community forums.
•actively participating in professional organizations through committee membership and leadership activities.
Qualifications: A master’s degree in nursing is required for all faculty positions in the School of Nursing. An earned doctorate or significant progress toward completion of the doctorate is preferred in the baccalaureate program and required in the graduate program. Other qualifications include:
•A license to practice as a registered professional nurse or eligibility for licensure in New York State and Tennessee.
•Experience in nursing education and curriculum development.
•Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication.
•Ability to work with diverse constituencies and staff.
•Demonstrated commitment to nontraditional education of adults.
•Experience with distance education preferred.
