The Writing Center serves adult learners seeking to develop their professional writing skills in an on-line environment. The Writing Center is supported by the Provost’s Office and works collaboratively with stakeholders across the college to advance this strategic college initiative. In addition, the Director will lead a grant funded initiative in faculty training in writing in the disciplines, assist in implementing genre-and writing- enriched courses, including evaluation, development of a strategic plan and institutionalizing writing across the disciplines through college-wide policy and procedure development. The Director will also oversee the Online Writing Lab (OWL) and works closely with the WAC Group in developing and implementing college-wide writing initiatives.
This position is a part-time position located at 7 Columbia Circle, Albany, NY.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Provide leadership and strategic direction for the Writing Center in collaboration with the Provost’s office and other key academic constituencies.
•Integrate the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) initiatives, and the Online Writing Lab (OWL) into the Writing Center.
•Engage with thought leaders from a diverse mixture of backgrounds and experiences in writing to conduct a needs assessment for writing resources and develop a strategic plan for the Writing Center.
•Ensure that the OWL is updated and maintained to reflect the latest academic best practices and in writing curriculum; and to maintain its state-of-the-art aspirations for quality and efficacy.
•Serve as a faculty resource for the development, maintenance, and promotion of writing-enriched courses and manage projects related to faculty development in writing instruction.
•Manage projects to create student support resources in writing.
•In collaboration with the Provost’s Office, WAC Group, and College Curriculum Council, develop collegewide policies and procedures related to enhancing writing across the curriculum.
•Assume the principle investigator role in a grant funded Writing in the Disciplines (WID) initiative with multiple aspects including coordinating faculty training in Writing in the Disciplines, and developing student resources.
•Assist in the review, evaluation, and decision making regarding various vendors for tutoring services for fiscal year 2020-21.
•An MA or higher in Composition/Rhetoric, English, Education, or a related field.
•Experience working with Writing Across the Curriculum and Writing in the Disciplines initiatives.
•At least three years’ experience teaching writing at the college level with a record of strong teaching.
•Knowledge of current theories and best practices in writing across the curriculum, writing instruction, writing assessment, writing program administration, and teaching writing online.
•Experience and success in working with adult and non-traditional learners, including proven success in working with diverse co-workers and other collaborators.
•Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills.
•At least three years’ experience designing and teaching online writing courses with a record of strong teaching, preferred.
•Experience working in a Writing Center, preferred.
