The communications manager will have a range of responsibilities that support and foster understanding of Excelsior College’s mission, strategic plan, and initiatives among external and internal audiences. The position requires excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with the College’s academic and administrative leaders and other colleagues as well as with external audiences. The communications manager will develop of range of content, including emails, scripts, presentations, talking points, and other materials, and will manage institutional communications to varied audiences in collaboration with other stakeholders. The position is part of the Marketing team and will report to the director of content and creative services. This is a full-time position based at 7 Columbia Circle, Albany, N.Y. In addition to a resume, share 3-5 writing samples.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•Work with chief marketing and business development officer and director of content and creative services to support the development and execution of comprehensive communications strategies and campaigns.
•Develop a range of communications content, including scripts (Commencement and other events), presentations, talking points, blog posts, and writing and/or support for executive keynotes, remarks, opinion pieces, development appeals, panel discussions, and other speaking and writing opportunities.
•Review and edit communications for faculty, students, alumni, and other constituents for alignment with mission, strategic plan, and brand.
•Manage institutional communications to faculty, students, alumni, and other constituents in collaboration with key stakeholders.
•In coordination with other stakeholders, manage the communication of policy changes to internal and/or external audiences, ensuring policy handbooks and webpages are current. Edit policies as needed.
•Coordinate the production of Commencement materials, strategic plan, compliance reports, and other institutional materials, contributing editorial skills as needed.
•Support public relations and social media strategies by contributing to plans, writing news releases, social media copy, etc.
•Support the process of updating the Excelsior College website.
•A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, English, or a related field is required.
•Minimum 4 years of experience working in a communications capacity.
•Excellent verbal, interpersonal, written communication, and listening skills.
•Demonstrated ability to convey messages to targeted audiences.
•High degree of accuracy and excellent attention to detail.
•Comfort and ease with interviewing students, alumni, faculty, etc.
•Self-starter who works independently and in a team environment.
•Sound judgment; anticipates the implications and consequences of situations, and takes appropriate action to be prepared for possible contingencies.
•Strong analytical, critical and strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
•Experience developing remarks, statements, articles, and talking points.
•Ability to synthesize and communicate complex issues and information to diverse audiences.
