Associate Dean (Job #1288)

Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean performs complex duties related to the administration of academic programs and operations for the Business, Science and Technology Dept. within the School of Undergraduate Studies. The Associate Dean works in tandem with the other Associate Deans to assure the smooth operation of academic programs both within their school and among the other schools of the College. The Associate Dean will have regular contact with important internal and external entities and should be able to act with tact and maturity to obtain their support and cooperation. The Associate Dean may be frequently required to resolve personnel problems and handle high profile meetings. The Associate Dean will provide administrative leadership in the absence of the Dean.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Mentor, coach and evaluate program faculty including full-time program directors and part-time teaching faculty
- Supervise program staff; conduct annual performance reviews
- Provide academic leadership to include all general school academic and operational functions, in cooperation with the faculty and dean
- Lead the faculty and staff in carrying out the mission and achieving the goals of the School of Undergraduate Studies
- Collaborate with Deans, Associate Deans, unit managers, and staff throughout the College, as well as community members and leaders
- Participate in development of academic policies and represent degree programs on academic committees
- Interpret academic and employment trends for upper level administration
- Monitor the curricula and recommend policies in conjunction with the Faculty and Dean; oversee the academic quality and integrity of the degree programs and recommend appropriate changes, as necessary
- Explore new options for meeting degree requirements
- Assist the Dean in all activities pertaining to registration and accreditation of degree programs
- Provide leadership for maintaining the excellence and integrity of various degree programs through research and evaluation
- Represent Excelsior College at appropriate academic conferences, professional meetings, and community activities
- Seek external funding to support new academic and research initiatives
- Identify opportunities for growth of the school, including the development of new courses, programs and other initiatives
- Conduct ongoing program development, evaluation, and outcomes assessment activities; utilize results for continuous improvement of curriculum, policies, procedures and processes
Qualifications:
- The Associate Dean will hold a doctorate in an applicable discipline and will have on-line teaching experience
5-10 years of higher education experience, with minimum of 2-3 years of progressive experience as an administrative leader or in academic leadership - The Associate Dean should demonstrate disciplinary expertise; highly effective organizational and written and oral communication skills
- Experience in the development and implementation of on-line programs
- Familiarity with curriculum development and evaluation processes
- The ability to think strategically about marketing of academic programs; a commitment to non-traditional higher education for adults
- Familiarity with specialized accreditation process
- The ability to represent Excelsior College within the academic community
